I just thought I’d share some photos I took with my Leica C11 whilst in Bondi last month…

I managed to take a walk around St Kilda yesterday afternoon and give my new D40 a bit of a test run.

I discovered that Nikon’s are a lot different to Canons in terms of usage, not more difficult, just different. I also discovered my first minor irk with the D40, which is that it has no LCD display on the camera near the shutter release, like pretty much every other SLR ever. You can check the settings on the LCD screen on the back and through the viewfinder, so this might just be a case of getting used to it. Getting used to manually focusing the 50mm lens in outdoor conditions wasn’t as easy as I hoped and I’m not sure that I like fixed lens (is that the right term?) that aren’t wide angles. The kit lens was really nice to use though, the auto focusing seems a world apart from the crappy, noisy, old lens on my Canon EOS 1000.

Anyway photos…

st kilda crapWhoooooooo…

If you’ve browsed my flickr account or seen any photos I may have posted online, you’ll know that I’ve been shooting photos with a film slr for a while*. Well whilst thats been fun, the main problem with 35mm cameras has always haunted me, which is to say that it is expensive. Paying in the region of £10 or $20 to get a film developed is not ideal for learning the art of photography and I really have no interest in learning dark room techniques, well not yet.

So I decided to take the plunge and get myself a digital slr. A Nikon D40 to be precise. I got it with the standard 18-55mm kit lens, a spare battery, a 2 gig memory card and what seems to be the de rigeur f1.8 50mm lens, all for fairly cheap.

I’m looking forward to getting a chance to play with it. Results soon.

* My film slr is a Canon EOS 1000 with a 35-85mm lens (I think) and a 28mm wide angle lens… which I’m not looking forward to buying for the D40.

For the first time in well over a year, I got a film developed. There were some good shots and some bad. Below are a selection…

I had totally forgotten about the existence of this photo, until earlier when someone reminded me by posting it somewhere online.

Probably one of my better skate photos I’ve taken.

It’s a rainy day here in Melbourne… I’d much rather be back at Bondi, but this this framework won’t write itself…

Bondi beach

Update: Not raining anymore. Bondi is still appealing though.
